Halt Starwood Capital Group's Development of
the Makai Golf Course Open Space

The Issue
Located within the beautiful Princeville at Hanalei, Kauai HI Master Planned community, the Makai Golf Course links are a sanctuary, a haven untouched by development, and an integral part of the Princeville community.

Even more vitally, severe concerns exist - the land conceals historical anthrax burial sites. Over the years, the tranquility and natural beauty of this land have been a source of peace and comfort to the many visitors and residents of Princeville. Now, the threat of development by Starwood Capital Group, owners of the 1Hotel, looms large, foreshadowing a great violation of this sacred space and possible anthrax infection.

Decision Makers / Recipients
  • Mr. Barry Sternlicht - CEO & Founder, Starwood Capital Group, owners of 1Hotel
  • Mr. Derek Kawakami - Mayor of Kauai County
  • Mr. Mel Rapozo - Chair, Kauai County Council
  • Mr. Francis DeGracia - Chair, Kauai County Planning Commission
  • Mr. Kaʻāina S. Hull - Director, Kauai Planning Department
  • Ms. Patti Thiele - Chair, Princeville at Hanalei Community Association Board of Directors

"Be PONO and do the right thing here. You know it's wrong. Could be critical and dangerous with ANTRAX CONSEQUENCES . Local infastructure is threatened again by more GREEDY developers for the RICH. NOT needed or WANTED. Mahalo"

"Please preserve this space. We don’t need more toxins, we don’t need more buildings on our beautiful North Shore. Mahalo Nuu Loa"

"Barry Sternlick is interested in green but not green space. The area is a jewel and should be preserved as one of natures wonders not exploited. Additionally why have we not seen proof of the soils quality? The islands health facilities are not able to deal with such a potential health risk. Let’s be smart not risky. ."

"Keep open spaces as they are and we’re always meant to be!! Kauai does not need more development!"

"For the health and safety of the residents of this island, from our newborns to our Kupuna, I urge you to block this development. People will be forced to leave, and we will make sure that the world knows about this before considering buying or renting any property on Kauai. You will destroy our homeland forever. Have respect for our Hawaiian culture, please. Without the Hawaiians, are we still Hawaii? The answer is no."

"My backyard is the epicenter of anthrax burials on woods course, holes 6 and 7. please do not dig and disturb the spores to make us sick. Leave the green spaces alone , Princeville is already too crowded as it is ."

Judi(15005)4/24/25 05:47 am

"I will not condone disturbing the anthrax located under the Woods Golf Course, and endanfering peoples' lives."

Michael(96722)4/23/25 06:04 pm

"Preserve Princeville open space!"

Kyle(95476)4/23/25 05:48 pm

"Kauai, and especially the North side of the island is one of the few areas of the Hawaiian island chain that retains the breathing space that draws us all here. Voracious development has turned Oahu into a stressful overpopulated slab, loaded with big city problems. The development of Princeville has been completed, and with a wonderful result. There is no reason, other than blind greed, to jam in more posh housing structures. The act of adding more structures will damage the appeal of this space, while increasing the demands for expanded infrastructure: more roads, sewers, water, electricity generation. As the Princeville area becomes another congested tourist zone the property values and overall tax revenue will inevitably drop and the project will be halted. By then Starwood will be long gone, leaving the ugly excavations of the prior golf course and partially completed subdivisions for the next starry-eyed developer. Princeville ain't broke - let's not "fix" it!"
